Social Security |
Social Security benefits are not paid automatically to the surviving family in the event of a loved ones death. An application must be made and specific documents must be furnished.
WHEN AND HOW TO FILE A CLAIM:
Call the Social Security toll-free number 1-800-772-1213 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. any business day to obtain an appointment
Do not delay filing for benefits if you can't get all of the following documents
Try to get the following documents before your appointment and bring them with you. To facilitate receiving Social Security Benefits, you may need the following original or certified documents:
- Survivors U.S. Birth Certificate (If you were born outside the U.S., both proof of birth and U.S. Citizenship)
- Death Certificate
- Marriage Certificate (if married or divorced)
- Final Divorce Decree (if divorced)
- Minor Children's Birth Certificate(s)
- Voided check or your savings account passbook for direct deposit
In addition to other Social Security Benefits, a one-time death benefit not to exceed $255.00 may be available to: A Surviving spouse who lived in the same household as the deceased person at the time of death, a surviving spouse eligible for or entitled to benefits for the month of death or a child or children eligible for or entitled to benefits for the month of death. The Price Funeral Chapel will complete a "Funeral Directors Statement of Death" which can help in applying for benefits. It usually requires about two months for a survivor to start receiving Social Security Benefits.

By calling this number you can make an appointment to apply for benefits, have your claim taken by phone, transact other Social Security business, or just ask questions.

Veterans Benefits |
A veteran who has served honorably in the United States Military is entitled to:
- A flag
- A grave monument
- A cash benefit for a veteran with a service connected disability
- Burial in a national cemetery (A copy of the Discharge Papers, the Enlisted Record of Separation (DD214) is required.)

Obtaining Death Certificates |
The State and County Health Departments currently charge $8.00 for each certified copy of a death certificate. The Price Funeral Chapel can assist in obtaining certified copies of death certificates.
Certified Death Certificates May Be Purchased From:
- The county health department in which the death occurred for the current year and the year prior only.
- The county recorders office for the current year and years prior.
- The California Office of State Registrar for the current year and years prior.
Certified Death Certificates May Be Needed To:
- Collect life insurance.
- Transfer title of real estate.
- Transfer title of vehicles.
- Sell or transfer stocks, bonds, mutual funds, pension or annuities.
- Close or transfer bank account.
- Collect union benefits.
- Social Security.
